US President Joe Biden has signed an order that will ban US investments into certain cutting edge technologies in China, including computer chips and artificial intelligence.

US President Joe Biden has signed an executive order that authorizes the Treasury Secretary to regulate certain US investments in Chinese technology, according to a statement.

They include three sectors: semiconductors and microelectronics, quantum information technologies, and artificial intelligence. Those investments could be prohibited if deemed to «pose the most acute national security risks». In addition to mainland China, the program also applies to Hong Kong and Macau.

«This program will seek to prevent foreign countries of concern from exploiting US investment in this narrow set of technologies that are critical to support their development of military, intelligence, surveillance, and cyber-enabled capabilities that risk US national security,» the statement added.
