Barclays has hired a former managing director and investment banker from J.P. Morgan to lead its Southeast Asia business.

Ee-Ching Tay has been named head of Southeast Asia banking, according to a statement, tasked with driving business growth, especially for M&A advisory and financing, as well as leading and cultivating the most senior client relationships.

In her Singapore-based role, Tay reports to head of banking for Asia Pacific and Greater China Vanessa Koo.

Tay has 20 years of investment banking experience in the U.S. and Asia. She was most recently managing director and head of Southeast Asia M&A for a decade at J.P. Morgan in Singapore. Previously, she was an executive director at UBS’ M&A team in New York.

Asia Expansion

The British lender has placed emphasis on hiring in Asia with additions this year that include Asia head of program trading Girish Mithran; vice chairman of Greater China banking Yehong Ji; and APAC head of equity capital markets Kelvin Teo.

«Southeast Asia is strategically important to Barclays as a dynamic high-growth region,» said Koo.

Tay replaces Sandeep Pahwa, head of Southeast Asia banking since November 2010, who will retain his other roles as vice chairman and head of APAC client coverage.
