The chief executive of Malaysia’s Maybank Group will step down at the end of his current contract with a search for a successor underway.

Following the end of a third term, Maybank Group CEO Abdul Farid Alias will not seek to renew his current contract which ends on August 1, according to an exchange filing, to pursue his own interests elsewhere. 

A search for a successor is now underway covering both internal and external candidates.

Farid, 52, began his banking career at a Maybank subsidiary in 1992 before taking on the role as group CEO in 2013. 

He will continue to oversee the bank's management and operations until a successor has been named and takes over the role.
