The former chief investment officer of sovereign wealth fund GIC has confirmed his intention to join Singapore’s upcoming presidential race.
Ng Kok Song has officially declared that he will run for president in Singapore’s upcoming elections, according to a «Straits Times» report.
«I feel that, at a time like this, it is so important that good people should come forward to serve the country, because the future of Singapore depends critically on good people coming forward to serve the country,» Ng said, adding that he had been mulling over this decision for months.
Financial Veteran
Ng joined the Finance Ministry in 1970 as an investment analyst before moving to the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) when it was formed in 1971. In 1986, he joined Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC as its first non-expatriate director, heading its equities and bonds department. Ng would later be named GIC’s first group chief investment officer in 2007 until retiring in 2013.
Ng is now the executive chairman of investment firm Avanda Investment Management, which he founded alongside two ex-GIC colleagues in 2015.
Singapore’s presidential race welcomes another contestant from the financial sector, in addition to ex-MAS chair Tharman Shanmugaratnam.
