8. Equity (2016)
The newest release on finews.asia’s list of best finance flicks, «Equity» is the first Wall Street film to depict a female banker in a leading role: «Breaking Bad» actress Anna Gunn as a sort of female Gordon Gekko who is unapologetic about being greedy and ambitious. Denied a promotion at her investment bank, she wins an initial public offering from Silicon Valley’s hottest new media startup.
Her success quickly sours as authorities home in, and her hugely successful career is threatened by scandal and corruption. Critically acclaimed, the film wasn't a commercial success. Perhaps, as on Wall Street itself, the world isn’t ready for a female-led, produced and directed project?
