Asia was home to the costliest cities for international workers, according to a report by Mercer. Swiss cities were also dominant on the list.

Hong Kong is the most expensive city for international workers, according to Mercer’s 2024 Cost of Living report. Rival hub Singapore ranked in second place. Switzerland was also dominant on the list with Zurich ranked in third place followed by Geneva, Basel and Bern. 

Factors that contributed to high living costs in 2024 include expensive housing markets, high transportation costs, higher cost of goods and services, inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, utilities, local taxes and education. 

The report’s methodology covers 200 items in 226 cities, from housing and transportation to food, clothing, household goods and entertainment.
