He will work with the firm's senior management team to develop the business’ Pan-Asian and Australian real estate platform covering both equity and debt.
Financial services firm Barings has appointed John Ratcliffe as the head of Asia Pacific real estate, a newly created position, the firm announced on Tuesday in a statement.
Ratcliffe will be based in Sydney, where he will work closely with Duncan Robertson, head of Asia Pacific and head of global business development group, to source capital and expand Barings’ real estate footprint in the region. He will focus initially on Australia and Japan, before exploring opportunities in China and other regions, as well as assist in capital raising from existing and new sources. He will report to Charles Weeks, head of Europe and Asia Pacific real estate equity to drive the growth of Baring’s third-party investment management business in the region.
The senior executive brings to the firm more than two decades' experience in the real estate industry, most recently at Challenger Real Estate, where he spent 12 years as executive director of transactions and capital raising. Previously, he worked in asset management at Australian high-end residential and mixed-use developer Niecon Developments.

«Our real estate activities in Asia have traditionally focused on working with our clients to deploy capital into the U.S. and Europe. By having John join the firm we are now building the capability to invest locally,» Weeks said in the statement.
