Casino Billionaire Sheldon Adelson Passes Away
A former Democrat, Adelson became a Republican over disagreements on issues like foreign policy and corporate tax policies. He and his wife are believed to be the major backers of Donald Trump, also an ex-Democrat, with more than $90 million of funding to related groups accordion to the Center for Responsive Politics.
He is also a staunch supporter of Israel and even reportedly offered to personally underwrite the cost associated to a move by the Trump administration to move its U.S. embassy in the country to Jerusalem – a move strongly opposed by Palestine.
«He was an incredible champion of the Jewish people, the Jewish state and the alliance between Israel and America,» said Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a statement yesterday. «He contributed endlessly to the Jewish state, funding breakthroughs in medicine and science and advancing higher education. He gave anonymously to help victims of terror and countless other people in need.»
«Warmth and Generosity»
According to the Las Vegas Sands Corp statement, Adelson was not only a successful businessman but also a generous employer, as he was «adamant that our [staff] across the globe continue to receive full pay and health care benefits even while the buildings in which they worked were closed» during the pandemic.
«There are countless additional untold stories of his warmth and generosity – efforts for which he never sought recognition or publicity and would only reply with a smile if asked about them,» the statement said. «He will be missed by people from all parts of the world who were touched by his generosity, kindness, intellect and wonderful sense of humor.»
«Sheldon was the love of my life,» said Dr. Adelson in a separate statement. «He was my partner in romance, philanthropy, political activism and enterprise. He was my soulmate. To me – as to his children, grandchildren, and his legions of friends and admirers, employees and colleagues – he is utterly irreplaceable.»
