Najib Razak is headed to Malaysia’s top tribunal after failing in the latest appeal to overturn a guilty verdict against the ex-prime minister’s alleged role in the 1MDB scandal.
Najib Razak, who pleaded not guilty and has consistently denied any wrongdoing, was sentenced to 12 years of imprisonment and a $50 million fine last year over his role in the 1MDB scandal.
In the latest development, he failed to appeal in another court through legal proceedings via Zoom.
«We dismiss the appeal on all seven charges and affirm the conviction on all seven charges,» said Judge Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil who agreed with the high court judge’s existing conviction and sentences.
Political Comeback
Meanwhile, Najib is also making a political comeback as his party, the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), which returned to power in August after being voted out three years earlier in the midst of widespread corruption allegations.
Najib has also stated in September that he does not rule out a return to the parliament via reelection, although it would require his current conviction to be overturned.
His lawyer Shafee Abdullah told the court that Najib would take the case to appeal at the Federal Court, Malaysia’s top tribunal.
