Australian exchange operator names its first-ever female chief executive.

ASX appointed Helen Lofthouse as its CEO, according to a statement, with the step effective August 1.

Lofthouse succeeds Dominic Stevens who steps down on July 31 and will remain to advise and assist with the transition until September 30, after which he intends to retire. Lofthouse first joined ASX in 2015 and currently serves as the group executive of the markets division. Previously, she also held senior roles at UBS and JP Morgan.

Lofthouse will lead ASX in the midst of a challenging period technologically. It experienced an outage in November 2020 that halted trading for almost an entire day. It faced subsequent regulatory action that imposed additional license requirements as a way of reducing future risks.
