Over the weekend, ex-Goldman banker Roger Ng arrived in Malaysia. Local authorities are reportedly making considerations about an investigation against him as well as support for asset recovery in the 1MDB scandal.
On Sunday, Roger Ng arrived in Kuala Lumpur after US authorities handed the former Goldman Sachs banker back to Malaysian authorities based on a previous agreement.
«We agreed to surrender Ng to the [US Department of Justice] so that he could face trial in the United States. The agreement was that once the trial concluded – whatever the outcome – Ng was to be returned to Malaysia,» said a report by local media outlet «The Star» citing Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution at a press conference.
«This was to enable our authorities to continue their investigation into the 1MDB case.»
Continued or New Probe
According to Saifuddin, Malaysian police will determine if they will proceed with the existing investigation or initiate a new one into Ng. He also noted that the «main objective» of bringing Ng back to the country was to secure his assistance in recovering assets from the 1MDB scandal.
«My responsibility as Home Minister was to facilitate the return of Roger Ng to Malaysia. The investigation is under the police's jurisdiction,» he added.
US Return?
In the US, Ng has been convicted of helping loot billions of dollars from 1MDB and he has been sentenced to 10 years in prison. On returning Ng to serve the jail term, Saifuddin did not specify if it would or would not occur.
«We have not come to that part yet,» he said. «He has just returned and let's see the outcome of the investigation.»
