Days before Georges Elhedery takes over as HSBC’s permanent CEO, the London-based bank has announced a series of changes to its senior management team.

HSBC has announced a series of changes to its senior management team, according to a statement. The changes will take effect on October 1 and, where applicable, are subject to regulatory approval.

The appointments have been unveiled days before Georges Elhedery becomes group CEO on September 2, succeeding Noel Quinn who will retire.

Wealth and Personal Banking

Barry O’Byrne, CEO of global commercial banking, is appointed CEO of global wealth & personal banking, based in Hong Kong. He succeeds Nuno Matos who has decided to step down to pursue other opportunities after nine years with HSBC. Matos will support O’Byrne in an advisory capacity throughout 2024 before leaving the bank in 2025 after a period of gardening leave.

An update on plans for O’Byrne’s successor will be provided in due course.

Human Resources

Aileen Taylor, group company secretary & chief governance officer, is appointed group chief human resources and governance officer. She takes over from Elaine Arden, group chief human resources officer, who has decided to step down after seven years in the role.

Taylor has over 20 years of experience advising boards and executives in delivering strategy, simplification and transformation.

Group Operations

Group chief operating officer (GCOO) John Hinshaw will also leave HSBC to pursue other opportunities after first joining the bank in 2019. His responsibilities will be split between two new group executive committee level roles: an elevated and expanded role of croup chief information officer (GCIO) as well as a newly defined GCOO.

Stuart Riley is appointed to the expanded GCIO role and assumes responsibility for data and innovation. He joined the bank in February 2024 and was most recently global co-chief information officer at Citi.

Suzy White will become GCOO on an interim basis. She has worked at HSBC for over 25 years and is currently the global banking & markets chief operating officer. White will attend the group executive committee but will not become a member. A formal recruitment process for a permanent GCOO is underway.
