With recent stock market gains and the talk of a new Chinese billionaire being created each week the expectations were high for the latest Sotheby’s and Christies auction offerings in Hong Kong.
Among the highlights were sales that have resonated around the world overnight.
Christie’s handbags and accessories sale in Hong Kong saw a fuchsia Hermès Birkin with diamonds set a record in Hong Kong as the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction. The handbag was sold to a phone bidder for an eye watering HK$1.72 million or US$221,846.
The identity of the buyer of Monday’s record sale wasn’t known.
Meanwhile total sales figures from the Snuff Bottle Auction over at Sotheby’s reached HK$35,234,125 with some HKS7.1 million being paid for the aptly numbered lot number 88.
This week will see more auction activity in both Hong Kong and Beijing, the results of which we will be reporting on.
