Renowned investment specialist Burkhard Varnholt is adding a high-profile role at Credit Suisse's Swiss bank to his job, displacing a veteran banker and one of the Swiss bank's prominent female executives.
Burkard Varnholt was named Chief Investment Officer for Credit Suisse's Swiss bank, effective in January. Varnholt has made several high-profile moves in recent years from Credit Suisse to Bank Sarasin, Julius Baer before returning to Credit Suisse.
Varnholt takes over the Swiss role from Anja Hochberg (pictured below) in addition to his responsibilities as deputy global investment chief and vice-chairman of the bank's investment committee. He will report to Michael Strobaek, the global investment chief and head of investment solutions and products, as well as Thomas Gottstein, who runs the Swiss unit.
Hochberg retains her roles as head of investment services and investment committee member.
Swiss Unit Hires
Varnholt's appointment is the latest in a host of hires disclosed recently under Swiss bank head Gottstein. Credit Suisse wants to list a minority stake in the unit with investors from the second half of next year, markets permitting.
The 48-year-old Varnholt returned last month to Credit Suisse, where he was global head of financial products and investment advisory in private banking until 2006. He holds a PhD in economics from the University of St. Gallen.
