Goldman Sachs has hired a pair of senior bankers from a rival to become co-heads of its Australian equities business.

Ben Clifford and Mario Argyrides were long term Macquarie staff and were poached to help rebuild Goldman Sachs equities division after recent departures. The pair were formerly division directors at Macquarie.

Goldman Sachs Australia chief executive Simon Rothery said two new recruits had 30 years experience in the equities industry and were divisional directors at Macquarie according to an internal memo seen by «The Australian.»

Senior Departures

Clifford spent 12 years with Macquarie working in Sydney and Tokyo and was the head of sales trading in Australia and sat on the Macquarie Securities Australia management committee. Prior to joining Macquarie, he worked with KPMG Corporate Finance, NIB Capital and Deutsche Bank in London.

Argyrides spent 19 years at Macquarie in Sydney, Tokyo, Seoul, New York and Hong Kong and most recently was running the bank’s Australian block trading desk.

The senior hires come as Goldman Sachs boosts its local equities team following a string of senior departures this year,
