A visit to Silicon Valley and Amazon headquarters convinced National Australia Bank’s CEO his industry is facing a revolution.
National Australia Bank's CEO Andrew Thorburn wants his bank to rapidly embrace its planned workforce automation project, according to an interview with the «The Australian Financial Review» (behind paywall). He and Patrick Wright, the chief technology officer, recently spent time in the U.S. meeting executives at Microsoft, Amazon and in Silicon Valley.
The visit confirmed to the pair NAB must accelerate its digital transformation. «There is huge disruption coming,» Thorburn says.
Digital in Jobs Out
Expediting its shift to digital National Australia Bank (NAB) has started cutting jobs in a move that will see up to 6,000 positions removed over the coming three years. At the same time, the bank is hiring 2,000 staff with technology skills as it moves to become a digital bank.
On Wednesday the bank announced the launch of the NAB Cloud Guild, a technology training program. The course will give more than 2,000 NAB employees the opportunity to develop skills in cloud computing, working with Amazon Web Services.
