While organizers opted for a temporary relocation to relatively safer Singapore amid the Covid-19 pandemic, quarantine and air travel restrictions worldwide have put a spanner in the works.
The «Singapore Davos» will now take place from 17-20 August 2021, instead of May, the World Economic Forum announced in a statement on Wednesday, citing travel restrictions globally.
«Although the World Economic Forum and Government of Singapore remain confident of the measures in place to ensure a safe and effective meeting, and local transmission of COVID-19 in Singapore remains at negligible levels, the change to the meeting’s timing reflects the international challenges in containing the pandemic,» the statement said.
«A global leadership summit needs the participation of all global stakeholders,» said Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.
Important Gathering
The annual invite-only meeting, which typically takes place in the Swiss alpine village in January, brings together chief executive officers from its 1,000 member companies, as well as selected politicians, representatives from academia, NGOs, religious leaders, and the media to discuss key issues of global concern.
The Special Annual Meeting in Singapore is expected to focus on «addressing the challenges of recovering from the pandemic and laying the basis for a more inclusive and sustainable world.»
