Quarterly asset flows from exchange-traded funds reached an all-time high with fixed income seeing an increasing share.

In the third quarter of 2024, exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows posted an all-time high to reach $390 billion, according to a report by Morningstar. The previous high of $333 billion was registered in the third quarter of 2021.

Year-to-date flows into global ETFs amounted to $947 billion with assets totaling a record $13.4 trillion. The report forecasts that total flows are on track to surpass $1 trillion.

Asset Class Share

In 2024 thus far, equities accounted for the majority of flows at 60 percent. Fixed income came in second place at 33 percent as the asset class saw record quarterly flows of $127 billion. Alternatives was a distant third with 3 percent.

«Expectations of interest-rate cuts in the US seem to have nudged investors to allocate more to fixed income in the second and third quarters of 2024,» Morningstar said.
