Morgan Stanley Asia Pacific chief executive Gokul Laroia has reportedly joined the American lender’s most senior management committee.
Gokul Laroia joins Morgan Stanley’s global operating committee, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing an internal memo, making him the first Asia-based executive to be part of the 18-member committee under global CEO James Gorman, who is also a member.
Laroia first joined Morgan Stanley in 1995 in India and has since served in various roles worldwide in Mumbai, New York, Singapore and Hong Kong. He took over as the Asia ex-Japan co-CEO in 2014 before becoming the sole chief in September following the announcement of fellow regional co-CEO and China CEO Wei Sun Christianson’s retirement. He also serves as the co-head of global equities, an area that is facing scrutiny by regulators – including Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission – over concerns related to its block trading business.
In 2021, Morgan Stanley registered strong results in the region with $7.45 billion in APAC revenue, a 70 percent year-on-year increase.
