National Australia Bank is simplifying top management with a rejig. A top executive recently grilled by lawmakers is the most prominent victim.

«We have a clear plan to transform National Australia Bank and create a sustainable business that puts customers first – and we are executing on that plan. Now is the right time to make these changes as we work to create a better bank and earn the trust of our customers,» NAB CEO Andrew Thorburn said in a statement on Monday.

Thorburn's top managements shuffle ushers out Andrew Hagger, NAB's head of consumer banking and wealth. Hagger had testified in a public inquiry on how banks including Melbourne-based NAB had effectively charged clients fees without providing any services. 

The bank said it will rename its customer products and services division into customer experience – focused on building advocacy and loyalty through the design and delivery of a leading banking experience. It includes customer experience, marketing, digital, products, NAB Labs and NAB Ventures.

  • Rachel Slade will lead this division in the new role of chief customer experience officer. Rachel has been executive general manager, of deposits  and transaction services since joining NAB last January from Westpac.
  • Mike Baird was appointed chief customer officer in consumer banking. He will lead NAB’s retail banking business a well as take a lead in the setting of our reputation agenda. 
  • David Gall moves to the role of chief customer officer in corporate and institutional banking. David has been NAB’s risk chief since August 2014.
  • Shaun Dooley joins NAB top management as chief risk officer. She is an NAB veteran who is currently group treasurer.
  • Hagger will leave NAB after 10 years, including the past eight years in top management. 

NAB said the changes are effective October 1.
