The firm has hired a senior executive from Credit Suisse to fill the new role.
Manulife Investment Management has appointed Christoph Schumacher as global head of real assets, private markets, the firm announced on Wednesday.
Schumacher joins from Credit Suisse Asset Management, where he was global head of real estate. He will relocate to Boston for the position, in which he will be responsible for defining the firm’s private real assets strategy and managing the operations and development, launch, and growth of investment solutions for clients across the globe. He reports to Steve Blewitt, global head of private markets.
Asia Ambitions
The firm has ambitious plans to grow its private markets capabilities in Asia and other regions, a Manulife IM spokesperson told finews.asia.
Having Schumacher on board will allow the firm to unify its capabilities in timber, agriculture, real estate equity, and infrastructure equity globally, Manulife said. The new head will oversee $42.9 billion in assets under management globally, with the heads of each of Manulife’s real asset teams reporting directly to him.
