A Chinese official spoke out about Jamie Dimon’s recent apology over his joke J.P. Morgan outlasting the country’s ruling party, acknowledging his attitude and sincerity.
Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said he «noticed the sincere reflection» from the apology of J.P. Morgan’s Jamie Dimon after making the joke during a panel discussion in Boston earlier this week.
«We believe this is the right attitude,» Zhao said yesterday at a briefing in Beijing.
Free Speech «Problem»
Interestingly, Dimon had just spoken about the dangers of doing business in China without being able to exercise free speech outside of the country, in addition to his joke about the Communist Party.
«If they start to tell you what you can say here [in the U.S.], because you do business in China, that’s a problem,» Dimon said at the event in Boston.
Apologizing Organizations
J.P. Morgan joins the list of global corporations that have issued apologies to China over remarks about various controversial issues such as pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong and Taiwan’s claim to sovereignty.
Other notable companies that have made similar moves in recent times include the NBA, Versace, Coach and Givenchy.
