There are fears of a return of lockdown measures in Shanghai after the city started new rounds of mass testing.

Shanghai announced two new rounds of mass Covid-19 tests, according to a government statement, given the need to trace infections linked to an outbreak at a karaoke lounge. Of the city’s 16 districts, all residents in nine districts and some in three others – including central business district Pudong – will undergo testing twice from Tuesday to Thursday this week.

During the testing rounds, residents in the affected districts are required to show a test that was taken within the last two days in order to leave their homes.

Lockdown Fears

The new rounds of mass testing have sparked fears that the city of 25 million could return to the highly unpopular lockdown measures which caused public discontent and economic damage.

Shanghai already requires mass testing every weekend until the end of July and residents also need to test themselves every three days in order to access areas like shopping malls or public transport.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Chinese financial capital recorded eight and 24 cases of local infections, respectively.
