Chinese authorities have arrested more than two hundred suspects linked to the major banking scandal that triggered mass protests in Henan.
234 people linked to the scandal were arrested this week, according to a statement from Chinese police, as part of an ongoing investigation that it said has made «significant progress».
The suspects are believed to be related to a criminal gang that illegally controlled four village and town banks, the statement added.
The arrests mark the latest development in China’s banking scandal that began with four lenders in central province Henan suspending cash withdrawals in April from accounts belonging to hundreds of thousands of customers. This sparked a number of protests, including one that attracted around 1,000 depositors before being violently quashed in July.
Separately, regulators have been offering repayments to depositors since mid-April beginning with accounts that have smaller amounts before gradually moving to larger accounts.
