Local authorities in Hong Kong are making persistent efforts to boost the city’s status as a global hub. A trio of financial events will be showcased next week featuring numerous industry leaders.

From March 25 to 27, Hong Kong will feature three major financial events: the «Wealth for Good in Hong Kong Summit» (WGHK), the inaugural «One Earth Summit» and the «Global Investors’ Symposium». According to Hong Kong financial secretary Paul Chan in a statement, this so-called «Financial Mega Event Week» aims to showcase Hong Kong’s «strengths, development potential and investment opportunities» as a global financial center.

This will be a key collaborative opportunity between the public and private sectors to lure the ultra-rich to select Hong Kong as their hub of choice. According to a recent Deloitte report, the city was home to more than 2,700 family offices. In the latest, Sheikh Ali Al Maktoum, the nephew of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, said he would also set up a family office in Hong Kong, managing up to $500 million.

WGHK

On March 27, Hong Kong will host the second edition of WGHK with a focus on four key topics: luxury and legacy, green technology, philanthropy as well as wealth legacy. Secretary for financial services and the treasury Christopher Hui said that around 100 family offices had expressed interest in attending the event, according to an «SCMP» report.

The government recently released a list of speakers with wealth management leaders including UBS’s Iqbal Khan, HSBC’s Annabel Spring, J.P. Morgan’s Harshika Patel and LGT’s Prince Max von Liechtenstein. Renowned figures outside of finance will also attend such as NBA legend Dwyane Wade.

Global Investors’ Symposium, One Earth Summit

Co-organized by US-based non-profit think tank Milken Institute, the inaugural Global Investors’ Symposium is expected to attract some 400 corporate executives, asset managers, family office principals and industry leaders to attend. Speakers that have been confirmed include UBS group CEO Sergio Ermotti as well as LGT’s Prince Max von Liechtenstein.

Finally, Hong Kong will also host the One Earth Summit for the first time to focus on sustainability in finance. Subjects that will be discussed include achieving net-zero emissions.

Non-Financial Events

In addition, major non-financial events have also been scheduled for next week and the week after. They include Art Basel Hong Kong from March 28 to 30 as well as the Hong Kong Rugby Sevens on April 5.

«Driven by the mega event economy, the series of events during the Financial Mega Event Week are expected to generate strong synergy effects and attract people from all over the world to Hong Kong, for their experience of the excitement and dynamism of the city,» Chan added.
