The political leadership on the mainland seems to be trying to put the geopolitical confrontation on a more positive footing following the presidential vote.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has extended his congratulations to Donald Trump following his victory in the US presidential election, a statement released Thursday by Xinhua indicates.

According to the statement, he «urged» the two countries to «get along» for the benefit of both and the wider world.

Sustainable Relationship

«History teaches that China and the United States gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation, noting that a stable, sound and sustainable China-U.S. relationship serves the two countries' shared interests and meets the aspiration of the international community,» Xinhua indicated.

Xi also expressed hopes the two countries would show mutual respect, and exhibit peaceful coexistence with each other while strengthening dialogue and communication with a view to properly managing differences and expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.

Vance Congratulated

Xinhua said Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also extended his congratulations to J.D. Vance as vice president-elect.

Although it is too early to tell given Trump will not take office until late January, the statement is a clear indicator of the mainland’s interest in setting the almost-decade of geopolitical confrontation between the two countries on a more positive footing.
