Singapore’s longest serving finance minister has passed away at the age of 96.
Former Singapore finance minister Richard Hu has passed away at the age of 96. He was the longest serving finance minister of the city-state, holding the role from 1985 to 2001.
Previously, Hu was the chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore from 1985 to 1997. He also also worked at Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC as a board director in 1981 before succeeding its first managing director in 1983. He would later become the founding chairman of GIC’s real estate arm in 1999 and led the business for 10 years.
«[Hu] stewarded our finances well and provided a steady hand to steer our economy through the 1997 Asian financial crisis,» deputy prime minister Lawrence Wong said in a social media post. «In his quiet and humble way, he has served Singaporeans with distinction and made Singapore a better place for us all!»
