DBS, BOC Customer Data Stolen in Ransomware Attack
The printing vendor of DBS and Bank of China in Singapore has been hit by a ransomware attack, resulting in stolen customer data.
Toppan Next Tech (TNT), the vendor of DBS and Bank of China in Singapore responsible for printing customer statements and letters, has become a victim of a ransomware attack.
At DBS, this potentially affected 8,200 customers, mostly related to accounts from brokerage arm DBS Vickers, according to a statement. Data that may have been compromised included first and last names, postal addresses as well as details relating to equities held. The bank added that its systems have not been compromised with no evidence of unauthorized transactions.
Bank of China’s Singapore branch saw 3,000 customers affected and data exposed included names, addresses and, in some cases, loan account numbers, according to a separate statement. The Chinese lender also underlined that there was no indication that internal systems have not been compromised while customer deposits and monies remain safe.
Regulator Response
In response, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) noted that no customer login information had been compromised with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) aiding TNT in their investigation and advising on containment measures.
«MAS is in close engagement with the affected banks on their risk-mitigating measures and follow-up with customers. The impacted banks have placed the relevant accounts on enhanced monitoring, and are contacting affected customers as a matter of priority,» the regulator said in a statement.
Ransomware is a type of malware that encrypts a victim's personal data and denies access until a ransom is paid.
