Hong Kong’s next chief executive is reportedly seeking to propose looser border controls with mainland China as part of broader plans to resume travel.
Hong Kong chief executive-elect John Lee plans to propose a «closed loop» system for quarantine-free business travel with mainland China, according to a report by local media «Sing Tao» citing unnamed sources.
No details were disclosed on the system nor a date to formally make a proposal.
«Closed Loop»
The «closed loop» system is akin to bubble-like arrangements whereby workers are isolated to prevent Covid transmission.
The approach has been widely adopted in Shanghai with 20,000 bankers, traders and other workers having slept over in their office towers in the Lujiazui business district since late March to keep financial operations alive in mainland China’s top hub.
In addition to satisfying mainland authorities for a reopening, Hong Kong also faces the additional challenge of the pandemic in the country. While Shanghai’s situation appears to be improving, with hopes for a reopening by late June, there are clusters emerging elsewhere in the nation, including Beijing.
