Politics continue to play a role in banking with Paris-based BNP Paribas reportedly receiving a call from a US politician regarding its involvement in the Chinese digital yuan.
BNP Paribas recently received an «unexpected phone call» from an unnamed Republican congressional aide inquiring about its work with Beijing’s digital yuan project, according to a «Bloomberg» report citing anonymous sources.
A Paris-based spokesperson for BNP Paribas declined to comment.
In May, the French lender said it would collaborate with Bank of China to meet corporate client needs like digital yuan payments through e-wallets.
China is a leading developer of central bank digital currencies worldwide with 130 countries in total currently exploring their own versions of electronic fiat, according to a study by US think tank Atlantic Council.
