Taiwan concluded its elections over the weekend with the Democratic Progressive Party’s candidate selected as the new president.
The Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) William Lai Ching-te has been selected as the new President of Taiwan, according to election results, winning 40 percent of the vote. This marks the third consecutive four-year presidential term won by the ruling party.
However, the DPP lost its majority in Taiwan’s parliament amid domestic challenges such as high housing costs and stagnating wages.
On cross-strait relations, Lai’s party supports a separate Taiwanese identity while rejecting Beijing's territorial claims over the self-ruled island. In response to Lai’s win, Chinese officials said that relations would remain unchanged, adding that the results showa that the DPP cannot represent mainstream public opinion in Taiwan.
