Hong Kong’s legislative council has officially passed Article 23, a controversial security law that includes bans on various acts opposing Beijing.
On Tuesday evening, Hong Kong’s legislative council unanimously approved Article 23. The security law will prohibit acts of treason, secession, sedition and subversion against Beijing, with some crimes carrying life sentences.
«Today, we have passed the Safeguarding National Security Bill,» said chief executive John Lee in an address at the council meeting. «It demonstrates the greatest value of 'patriots administering Hong Kong', enabling the HKSAR to gloriously accomplish the sacred mission of legislating for Article 23 of the Basic Law.»
