There will be a change of leadership at Swiss Re this summer. Christian Mumenthaler is stepping down after eight years as CEO and 25 years with the reinsurer.
Andreas Berger (pictured below) will take over as Group CEO at Swiss Re at the beginning of July. The former CEO of Corporate Solutions will take over from Christian Mumenthaler, who has led the reinsurer since 2016, according to a press release issued on Wednesday.
The 57-year-old Berger joined Swiss Re in March 2019 as Chief Executive Officer Corporate Solutions and a member of the Executive Board. He previously held various management positions at Boston Consulting Group, Gerling and Allianz.

At Allianz, he was Chief Executive Officer of the London branch of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE (AGCS) from 2009 and was appointed to its Board of Management as Chief Regions & Market Officer in 2011. He was also responsible for the Allianz Group's global broker channel distribution.
Next Phase of Development
«The Board of Directors agreed that Andreas Berger is the right leader to build on the company's positive momentum and lead Swiss Re into the next phase of its development,» said Jacques de Vaucleroy, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Mumenthaler has steered the company through a period of heightened natural catastrophe activity, an unprecedented low-interest rate environment and the Covid-19 pandemic, he added. During his time, Swiss Re's net premiums and fee income increased from around $30 billion to $45 billion in 2023, while the Group's capitalization was significantly strengthened.
