The US Department of Justice has returned more 1MDB funds to Malaysia which previously voiced criticisms about limited repatriation.
The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has repatriated another $156 million in misappropriated funds in Malaysia, according to a statement. In total, the department has returned approximately $1.4 billion.
«Beginning in 2016, a landmark effort […] led to the seizure of over $1.7 billion in stolen assets. The funds include both funds finally forfeited and funds the department assisted in recovering and returning,» the DOJ said. «The department continues to litigate actions against additional assets allegedly linked to this scheme.»
Malaysia’s Pursuit
Malaysia continues to pursue the 1MDB case, including placing pressure on the US to repatriate more of the $4.5 billion in misappropriated funds.
In May, 1MDB also sued PetroSaudi executive Patrick Mahony for allegedly aiding individuals, including ex-Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and fugitive financier Jho Low, in the scandal.
