For only the second time in the brand's history, a «Gran Reserva» has been released. finews.asia had the privilege of tasting this new super-premium cigar.

The recently launched Cohiba Espléndidos Gran Reserva is only the second Gran Reserva in the brand's lineup, following the 2003 Cosecha. It is based on the iconic Espléndidos format (ring gauge 47, length 178 mm), promising a long-lasting and elegant smoking experience.

What sets this Gran Reserva apart is the meticulous five-year aging process applied to all its tobacco leaves – filler, binder, and wrapper – before being crafted into this limited-edition cigar. Only 5,000 individually numbered boxes were produced for the global market.

Only 5,000 Boxes

finews.asia had the opportunity to explore this cigar during a private tasting at Zurich’s renowned Manuel's cigar lounge. It is a cigar that demands time and attention. Over two hours, we unraveled its complex flavor profile.

Even before lighting, the cold draw hints at a vast and intricate palette: notes of cocoa, balsamic freshness, and honey signal an aromatic explosion to come.

Subtle Fruity Nuances

Once lit, the cigar develops a creamy profile with vegetal undertones, wood, cocoa, and malt. Subtle hints of cassis lend it a fruity touch, while fine nutmeg and roasted notes add depth and elegance to the first third.

The second third showcases the Gran Reserva's mastery: an increasing sweetness oscillates between impressions of holiday pastries and fruity orange blossoms. Surprising hints of coconut further highlight its complexity.

Crescendo in Sweetness

The final third brings a crescendo of sweetness – caramel and pronounced cassis liqueur notes – balanced with a slight, newly introduced spiciness that adds finesse.

Overall, the Cohiba Espléndidos Gran Reserva lives up to the promise associated with Cuban premium cigars. It delivers a multifaceted flavor profile, showcases an interesting evolution as it burns, and is flawlessly crafted – purportedly rolled entirely by two of Havana's most experienced torcedores.

A Current Benchmark

From its meticulous production process to its exclusive aging and limited availability, this cigar represents the current pinnacle of Cuban craftsmanship.

Manuel Fröhlich, owner of Manuel's, aptly summarizes the newcomer: «Among Cohiba's recent innovations, this is undoubtedly a very special cigar. I foresee significant potential for its sensory and monetary value to grow.»
