Bank of China (Hong Kong) has appointed a new chief executive after the role was left vacant for several months.

Bank of China named Sun Yu as a new executive director, vice chairman and CEO of its Hong Kong unit, according to the Bank of China (Hong Kong) website. Sun will relocate from the mainland where he was most recently the president of Bank of China’s Beijing branch. His previous role is expected to be replaced by Wang Zhiheng, current general manager of human resources, according to a «Caixin» report citing unnamed sources.

Sun succeeds former Bank of China (Hong Kong) chief Gao Yingxin who resigned around May this year with reported interest in joining the country’s largest privately owned lender, China Minsheng Banking Corp., as its chairman.

Sun is a longtime Bank of China veteran, having joined the mainland lender in 1998. He has held multiple senior leadership positions with exposure to the bank’s international business, most notably the U.K., where he served as the general manager of the London branch and the city’s trading center for three years.
