3. The Big Short (2015)
Based on the Michael Lewis book, the movie traces the roots of the financial crisis. The point isn't how the film will end – the audience knows the ending going in. Instead, the story is told through the eyes of several unlikely characters who predicted the housing bubble would burst. The film won an Academy Award for best adapted screenplay – an amazing feat for a film heavy on the details of complex financial instruments and misfit characters.
«The Big Short» keeps the storyline moving by having lead Ryan Gosling, who plays a Deutsche Bank trader, speak directly into the camera, and with cameo appearances by celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain and singer-actress Selena Gomez to explain the in and outs of high finance.
