The Swiss attorney general is investigating the whistleblower who was one of the key witnesses helping authorities to unravel the corrupt networks surrounding Malaysian state fund 1MDB.
Xavier Justo is a Swiss citizen who worked for Petrosaudi, an oil-producing company in Saudi Arabia. He was convicted in Thailand of trying to blackmail his now ex-employer with confidential documents he stole from the company, documents suggesting an involvement of Petrosaudi in the 1MDB scandal.
The multi-billion corruption and money-laundering investigation was spearheaded by the U.S. and also involved Switzerland and Singapore. BSI private bank and Falcon Private Bank were subsequently closed in Singapore as a consequence of the affaire.
Economic Espionage
Justo, who today is said to be in Malaysia, has some unfinished business in his home country of Switzerland though. The Swiss attorney general is investigating the whistleblower on grounds of suspected economic espionage, according to a report in «Der Bund» newspaper (behind paywall). Michael Lauber, the head of the office, confirmed the probe to the newspaper.
The former justice minister of Switzerland, Simonetta Sommaruga, in September 2018 even signed an authorization to prosecute Justo, the newspaper added. Sommaruga today is minister for the environment, transport, energy and communication, while Karin Keller-Sutter took over at the ministry of justice.
Amnestied by Thai Government
Justo in December 2016 was freed by Thai authorities as part of an amnesty granted following the death of Thai King Bhumibol. He spent two years in prison in Bangkok and had about a year left of his sentence.
