Despite fugitive financier Jho Low being on the run from authorities on charges for misappropriating at least $4.5 billion in 1MDB funds, Malaysian police claim to know his location and are «confident» to be able to retrieve him.
Malaysia police chief Abdul Hamid Bador claims he has knowledge of the country Low is residing in without naming it but adds that an extradition treaty currently exists.
«[Low] has the protection of someone,» Abdul Hamid said, quoted by Malaysian media «Sinar Harian». «Our investigations found that he is free to move around, and able to run his businesses without any restrictions.»
When asked about the likelihood of capturing Low, he claimed that he was «confident» and that the accused mastermind could be secured possibly by year-end.
Former Prime Minister Najib Razak was also allegedly a central figure in the 1MDB scandal and has been charged with 42 criminal offenses related to losses from the sovereign wealth fund and other state entities. Low and Najib have both consistently denied any wrongdoing.
