Malaysia's Police chief calls on the fugitive financier to return to Malaysia if he has contracted the Covid-19 virus after receiving intelligence that the businessman was hiding in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak.
Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador revealed that Malaysian authorities had received intelligence that Jho Taek Low, the alleged mastermind behind the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal, was using Wuhan, China as his hideout.
Speaking at a media conference not related to the matter in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday, Abdul Hamid added there was no information on whether Low had fled the city since the Covid-19 outbreak in the city, local media outlet «Bernama» reported.
«So far the Malaysian Health Ministry is the best as nine people have successfully been cured,» Abdul Hamid said, calling for Low to return to Malaysia if he had contracted the virus.
Red Notice
Low is wanted for his role in the misappropriation of funds from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) totaling $4.5 billion, according to the U.S., and $7 billion, according to Malaysia. The monies had been laundered through financial institutions in several jurisdictions, including the United States, Switzerland, Singapore, and Luxembourg.
Despite not being on Interpol's Red Notice website, Abdul Hamid confirmed that Low was listed as a wanted individual. «The Interpol red notice has two categories, one which can be shared with the public and one more is limited to enforcement agencies only,» he said.
The notice is issued on behalf of the police in a member state to alert their counterparts around the world about crimes, criminals and threats for the purpose of extradition.
