Graphic novel author Emily Rose Laochua writes about an imaginary dystopia she hopes doesn't become reality in the series «The Convergence». Endangered species and rainforests being felled for palm oil plantations are of particular concern to the ex-Credit Suisse investment banker.
In the bleak world of her work where trees have already vanished, Laochua describes the struggle for survival in the city of Kafer surrounded which is surrounded by a desert and, where the last remnants of humanity have gathered and human souls are used for energy. Soul hunting is a profession there, and the graphic novels then revolve around the players in this sinister craft.
Uncertain Credit Suisse
The author herself has a day job. She holds the rank of managing director at the investment banking arm of Credit Suisse, where she was most recently responsible for advising investors on sustainability rankings. However, as the industry portal «Efinancialcareers» reported, Laochua is now on the move after 18 years at the bank.
The executive joins a number of investment bankers who have left the crisis-ridden institution in recent months. After Ulrich Koerner took over the reins at Credit Suisse as the new CEO, the investment bank could be radically scaled back again in the coming months. The question is whether Laochua's professional future at the Swiss house was too dystopian.

Evaluating Love and Compassion
The report went on to say she has no illusions about her profession. At a TED conference (video below), she explained to an audience in 2018 the financial system can only inadequately value intangible values such as love, compassion, the ecosystem, or society.
This shortcoming, however, did not cause Laochua to turn her back on banking. She is moving to Credit Suisse competitor Bank of America, where she will also be looking after sustainable offerings.
