The tiny island of Sentosa joined to mainland Singapore by a causeway, is going to host the upcoming summit between the heads of state of the U.S. and North Korea.
The Capella Singapore is the venue for the landmark meeting of the leaders of the U.S. and North Korea, according to several media reports on Monday. Using the isolated playground will give security services the ability to easily lock down large areas.
Sentosa is also home to theme park Universal Studios and a casino. Advance teams of working-level delegations from the U.S. and North Korea gathered earlier last week at the hotel to discuss logistics and security issues related to the June 12 summit.
Who Pays?
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is known not to trust international hotel chains and is expected to be housing his delegation at the locally owned Fullerton Hotel. The property is owned and operated by Singaporeans with close business interests in China, Kim's ally.
However with little in the way of foreign exchange reserves and currently under severe sanctions, it is expected that Singapore will pick up the costs for the North Koreans. U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to be housed at the five-star Hotel Shangri-La a little outside the central business district, closer to the Orchard Road shopping mile.
Discreet Way
According to «USA Today», an arms-control organization that seeks to ban all nuclear weapons has offered to pay for North Korea's hotel stay in Singapore. U.S. officials were seeking a discreet way to pay Kim's hotel bills because «the prideful but cash-poor pariah state» wants a foreign country to cover the costs, «The Washington Post» reported last weekend.
