Kweku Adoboli, the former UBS rogue trader, should have been deported to Ghana today. He received an unexpected reprieve.
The flight for Kweku Adoboli from London to Ghana, his country of origin, was booked for 4 a.m. on Tuesday. He never took that flight and is still back in London.
The U.K. Home Office accepted the application for a judicial review of the case and the judge in charge ordered a stay of execution until the end of the review, according to a report by «Bloomberg», which cited an email from Adoboli’s spokesperson.
Adoboli will be allowed to visit friends and his partner in Scotland in the coming five to ten days.
Politicians Lobbied PM
Politicians have been lobbying Prime Minister Theresa May against the deportation of Adoboli, with a letter signed by 114 members of parliament demanding that he should be allowed to remain in the U.K.
Adoboli had caused UBS a trading loss of $2.3 billion in 2011. In 2012, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and he served half. Adoboli has no U.K. passport but has lived in the U.K. for 26 years.
Exception Possible
The law preserves the right to expel foreigners who fall foul of the law – with the possibility to grant exceptions in case of strong public interest. Such cases can involve family or professional reasons.
