«La dernière chasse» by Jean-Christophe Grangé
What it is:
It's a crime drama: the gruesomely disfigured body of Count Juergen von Geyersbeg – an heir to a German industrial fortune of more than 10 billion euros together with his sister Laura – is found in a forest in French Alsace. He had been in the region to take part in a hunt organized by his family. The investigation by police detective Pierre Niémans ultimately leads to «Dirlewanger,» a brigade of criminal storm troopers set up in Nazi-era Germany.
Why I recommend it:
«I love this writer of crime fiction, who reached acclaim with «Crimson Rivers». He is masterful at building tension. The criminal investigations provide critical analysis of our society, as well as the deepest abyss of the human mind which unfortunately exists. An entertaining, gripping, and easy to read crime novel.»
