Former Bank of America compliance director Samuel Bickett has lost an appeal of a conviction against him for assaulting a plainclothes police officer two years ago.
A High Court in Hong Kong rejected the appeal of Samuel Bickett against the conviction, sending him back to jail to serve the rest of his sentence which totals four and a half months.
A U.S. citizen and former compliance director at Bank of America, Bickett was involved in a scuffle between a plainclothes police officer and members of the public in December 2019 during Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests.
In a widely shared video, Bickett can be seen grabbing the extendable baton of a middle-aged male who did not immediately reveal he was a police officer. The police officer later said he drew his baton in an attempt to apprehend a teenager who had jumped a turnstile.
Court of Final Appeal
According to a «Financial Times» report, Bickett is «determined to appeal» to Hong Kong’s highest court – the Court of Final Appeal – to «test the ability of the rule of law and judicial independence».
«I would have done everything exactly the same,» he said. «I don’t regret anything.»
