Hong Kong-based insurer AIA has announced the appointment of a regional chief.

AIA has appointed Fisher Zhang as regional chief executive, according to a statement, subject to regulatory approvals. In the role, he will have market responsibility for mainland China, South Korea and Vietnam. He will also become a member of the group executive committee and report to Lee Yuan Siong, group chief executive and president.

Zhang joined AIA China in 2000 and became its CEO in 2017. Under his leadership, AIA became the first foreign company to have a wholly-owned life insurance subsidiary in mainland China. Since then, the insurer has expanded its presence in the country to 10 geographies with branches in Tianjin, Hebei, Sichuan, Hubei and Henan. Most recently, it received regulatory approvals to begin preparing for new branches in Anhui province, Shandong province and Chongqing municipality.
