While the competition procrastinates, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has partnered with another mobile payment provider.
Australia and New Zeaknd Banking group (ANZ) announced its customers in Australia can now use Samsung Pay to make secure purchases wherever contactless payments are accepted.
The introduction of Samsung Pay marks the fourth mobile payment service ANZ offers its Australian customers and further enhances the bank’s position in using digital technology.
ANZ is the only major Australian bank to offer customers mobile payment services across both Android and IOS devices.
Tit For Tat
A spat broke out between Apple and some of Australia's largest banks last year and became increasingly inflamed.
Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation, National Australia Bank, and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank accused Apple of acting against the interests of customers.
Apple fired back accusing the banks banks of pushing the costs of Apple Pay on to their customers, delaying the expansion of the service to 70 percent of Australian card holders.
Fast or Last
Only ANZ embraced the Cupertino based tech giant while its peer group has instead been fighting a losing battle against the pervasive mobile payments system.
ANZ rolled out Apple Pay to more than 500,000 customers with a Mastercard credit card, following an earlier release to its five million debit card holders in April 2016.
Open Approach
Commenting on the new partnership, ANZ Managing Director Products, Bob Belan said: «Our customers have been asking for this and we have listened.»
«It made sense for us to introduce Samsung Pay in Australia given its strong market share and open approach to technology that its customers highly value,» he added.
