Australia and New Zealand Banking Group has appointed a new chief executive to an ASEAN member state.

Long time Australia and New Zealand Bank (ANZ) executive Rufus Pinto takes on the role of CEO Laos, reporting to Dennis Hussey, CEO Vietnam and Head of Greater Mekong Region. He is currently regional country head for ANZ in Vanuatu, Kiribati & New Caledonia, the bank said in a news release.

Prior to this, Pinto held senior roles with ANZ across businesses including Corporate and Institutional banking, Small to Medium business banking and Private Wealth. Subject to regulatory approval, Pinto will commence in the role on 1 October 2017.

Challenging Environment

ANZ was the first locally incorporated international bank in Laos. Bordered by Myanmar and China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the southwest, and Thailand to the west and southwest Laos has struggled to match the economic dynamism of its neighbours.

An announcement on the new regional country head for ANZ in Vanuatu, Kiribati & New Caledonia role will be made in coming weeks.
