A Chinese-American academic was expelled from Singapore over allegations he operated for a foreign country. Now, the city-state has ruled on an appeal lodged by the well-known professor.

Singapore yanked residency for Huang Jing earlier this month for subversion and meddling in foreign policy. It also banned his wife, Shirley Yang Xiuping, claiming she was informed of her husband's actions.

The move came as a shock to Huang, then a tenured professor at Singapore's prestigious Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. He had lived with his family in Singapore for years, and even owned property there.

Huang, who told local media he had been having dinner on Havelock Road with his wife when told of the news, immediately appealed the decision – unsuccessfully, it has emerged.

No Appeal

Huang and his wife have 14 days to leave Singapore, and will be permanently barred from reentering, the Ministry of Home Affairs told «Channel News Asia». The decision is final.

His ouster is stunning, both for the infrequency which Singapore expels foreigners as well as the backdrop. The descendants of Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of the finance paradise, including his son, current Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, are locked in a bitter family feud over their father's legacy.

Stability Threat

Huang has researched and spoken widely, including to finews.asia, about understanding China in the west. «Channel News Asia» said Huang has denied the Singaporean allegations against him.

The unprecedented ouster raises questions about Singapore's stability, one of its most important characteristics and the bedrock of its finance industry and economic prosperity.

The family feud has played out as the finance center is also roiled by the billion-dollar graft scandal surrounding Malaysia's 1MDB, which has ensnared domestic and Swiss banks.
