New Zealand's BNZ launches Apple Pay after customer feedback showed pent-up demand. But its parent group isn't on board.

Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is to offer its customers the ability to use their Apple iPhone or watch to pay at contactless terminals, the second bank to do so in New Zealand. The move follows that of ANZ which launched Apple Pay in New Zealand a year ago.

What makes the move interesting however is that BNZ's parent company, National Australia Bank (NAB), is still at loggerheads in Australia with the tech giant. A spat broke out between Apple and some of Australia's largest banks last year and has grown increasingly inflamed.

Against Customer Interests

Stephen Bowe, head of digital at BNZ, said it was not putting a specific date on when Apple Pay would be available but it would be in place by the end of October.

In reference to the dichotomy of the technology offering Bowe commented that the roll out in New Zealand was down to the markets being different between New Zealand and Australia.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Westpac Banking Corporation, National Australia Bank, and Bendigo and Adelaide Bank accused Apple of acting against the interests of customers.
